It is home to the royal family, government offices, and foreign missions, as well as several international development projects. In the morning, visit Tashichhodzong, the main government building and summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). Next, explore the National Library, housing centuries-old Buddhist texts, and the Institute for Zorig Chusum, where Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts are taught. Visit the National Institute of Traditional Medicine (outside only) to see medicinal herbs in use. After lunch, visit the National Memorial Chorten, a tribute to peace and the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Explore local handicraft shops, the Folk Heritage Museum, and the National Textile Museum. In the evening, drive through Dochula Pass (3,088m/10,130ft) to Punakha.

Punakha was Bhutan's capital until 1955, when the government moved to Thimphu. Initially located on the riverbank and dominated by Punakha Dzong, the town was relocated due to severe flooding in the 1990s. Renovations to Punakha Dzong have made it a magnificent sight, housing sacred artifacts and the embalmed body of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. After visiting, drive to Wangduephodrang, the last town before central Bhutan. The town’s striking Wangduephodrang Dzong played a key role in unifying Bhutan’s regions in the 17th century. Explore the local market before continuing to Paro, stopping at Semtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest dzong, built in 1627. Upon arrival in Paro, check into your hotel for the night.

Afterward, take a hillside trail to Rinpung Dzong, which has a fascinating history. After lunch, drive 18 km up the valley to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, where the Bhutanese successfully defended against Tibetan invasions in the 17th century. Also visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred shrines. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse to meet a local family and learn about their lifestyle, then stroll through the main street, exploring handicraft shops or enjoying a drink at a local café.
