Itinerary
Arrive in Paro on an early morning flight, offering stunning views of the world's highest peaks. After arrival, your guide will transfer you to Thimphu. Visit the Memorial Chorten, a gathering spot for locals, and the Changangkha Lhakhang temple with panoramic valley views. Explore the takin enclosure and the newly built Buddha statue offering breathtaking views of the valley. In the evening visit Tashichho Dzong, the king’s fortress, and enjoy an stroll through Thimphu, Bhutan's largest town.
Overnight in Thimphu.
Start your day with a visit to the traditional Handmade Paper Mill and the School of Arts and Crafts, where students learn 13 traditional Bhutanese arts. Then explore the Folk Heritage Museum to learn about traditional Bhutanese houses, followed by a stop at the National Library, which houses valuable religious texts and Buddhist teachings from around the world. Next, drive up to the Zilukha Nunnery to interact with the nuns. Enjoy lunch in town before heading towards Punakha. Along the way, cross Dochula Pass (3200 meters), where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Bhutan’s highest peaks if the weather permits. Take a break to admire the 108 stupas before descending into Punakha's subtropical valley. On the way to your hotel, take a hike through paddy fields and an old village to visit Chimi Lakhang, the temple of fertility, known for its religious phallus art.
Overnight in Punakha
In the morning, drive to visit Punakha Dzong, home to one of Bhutan’s most elaborate temples. This iconic fortressis a prime example of Bhutanese art and architecture. Later visit to visit Punakha Suspension Bridge to experience the thrill of walking on those ancient bridges. It is one of the longest and oldest suspension bridges of the scenically blessed kingdom, Bhutan built above Po Chhu River. After lunch, enjoy a one-hour uphill hike to Khamsum Yuley Lakhang, a temple with sweeping views of paddy fields and the snaking river below. Alternatively, you can drive towards Wangdi province and take a short hike to the ancient village of Rinchengang, which overlooks the ruins of Wangdi Dzong. It’s remarkable how the old houses have been preserved here. Or, if you're feeling tired, simply relax on your hotel’s balcony to enjoy the views and surrounding nature.
Overnight in Punakha.
After breakfast at your hotel, begin your drive to Phobjikha, a journey that takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of valleys and mountains. Upon arrival, you’ll reach Phobjikha, a serene glacial valley renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and as the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or your hotel in Phobjikha. In the afternoon, visit Gangtey Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most important Nyingmapa monasteries. The monastery offers breathtaking views of the valley and serves as a hub for meditation and learning. If you're interested, stop by the Crane Information Centre to learn about the black-necked cranes and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. In the evening, unwind at your hotel, enjoying the calm and beauty of Phobjikha. The valley’s tranquil ambiance makes it an ideal place to relax and take in the scenic surroundings.
Overnight in Phobjikha
After breakfast, begin your journey from Phobjikha to Paro. The drive takes around 4 to 5 hours, offering scenic views of Bhutan’s countryside and mountains along the way. On the way, visit The Royal Botanical Park, Lampelri which is the first botanical park in Bhutan. The park spans 47 square miles (120 km²) and serves as a biological corridor between Jigme Singye Wangchuck and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Parks. It features a popular botanical garden covering 125 acres (51 ha), home to 46 rhododendron species, 18 native and 26 introduced from other regions of Bhutan. After the stop at Dochula, continue your drive to Paro. Visit the Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge by the Paro River, where you can view the Lhakhang and walk across the unique iron chain bridge adorned with colorful prayer flags. Built by the Iron Bridge Maker, Thangthong Gyalpo (1385-1464), it’s a historic architectural marvel.
Overnight in Paro
Start your day with a visit to Paro National Museum (Ta Dzong), once a watchtower, this museum showcases Bhutanese art, history, and culture. It offers excellent views of Paro Dzong and the surrounding valley. On the way back, visit Paro Dzong, this majestic fortress-monastery is located on the banks of the Paro River. Known for its architectural beauty and historical significance, it's an excellent spot to learn about Bhutanese culture. After lunch, drive to Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1649 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, was once an important military and administrative center. Destroyed by fire in 1951, it is now under renovation. While the interior is closed, visitors can enjoy views of the dzong and Paro Valley, located about 12 km from Paro, and use it as a starting point for hikes like to Tiger's Nest Monastery.
Overnight in Paro
As you depart from Paro Airport, the stunning Himalayan peaks provide a final breathtaking view. Leaving Bhutan, the memories of its serene landscapes, sacred monasteries, and vibrant culture will stay with you. The journey may end, but Bhutan’s beauty lingers in your heart.
